There seems to be a list on wiki that, while not perfect, is pretty thorough. I suggest we use that as a jumping off point. This is the repository for the names of the people. These are not THE people, these are just presented for consideration: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_comediansWe appear to need three categories: Top 50 comics Top 10 comedic troupes/groups/pairings Top 5 comedy writers Best Female Best Male Best Con Classiest Sassiest Bluest Sexy Funny Best Jew Any other categories? If I even HEAR the word Rita Rudner, it's on.

Paula Poundstone had like one joke that made me laugh. She was sitting on a stool and was slunched over. She said something like "I one day hope to be on Seasame Street as the letter O."

Once upon a time I saw a chick on one of those brick wall shows that made me chuckle...
Lisa Lampsanelly might make a list of funny chicks. It is actually kind of sad...Kathy Griffin? Maybe? She is meh most of the time but when you compare her to other chicks she moves up to "not bad".

The Dean Martin Roasts of the 1970s were sinfully indulgent, but were also perfect examples of comedians tending each other's gardens. The one man who always brought all the other comedians, and the 10-year-old me, to tears of laughter was the inimitable Foster Brooks. Foster Brooks roasts Sammy Davis Jr.Foster Brooks roasts Don Rickles

I have to agree about Ellen for women.
My favorites I've seen are Stephen Lynch and George Carlin. Wait, that's all I've seen live... but the reason I saw them live was because of their humor.
I also really enjoy Briaannnanannananan Regan (hey, it's hard to say)

On the subject of comedic groups/troupes/pairings: (Not doing a list, I'm bad at them) If I were doing a list Abbot & Costello would be at the top.
The rotating cast of Saturday Night Live would be on there as well.
Martin & Lewis were probably the last of the great comedy pairings.
The Second City has turned out a huge amount of talent as has The Groundlings.
I know that Geoff isn't a fan but Monte Python's Flying Circus created the formula by which most comedy is born.
I'm Not sure they fit neatly into the comedy category, but the Smothers Brothers probably deserve a mention here as well.

? Having been the owner of nearly every book, watched every John Cleese finer things, having watched every movie to the point of being able to recite each line with sickening accuracy, having put myself to sleep with The Final Rip Off more times than perhaps even The Phantom of the Opera, having seen the Hollywood Bowl thirty seven times, and actually stolen the copy from the 16,000 movies in Tuscawilla, having read Eric Idle's awful Spamalot Greedy Book, having scoured the compleat Python, a tome that weighs nearly 18 lbs and has caused more red rings around myanus than need be counted, having purchased the massive BBC dvd boxed set and forced Jen to watch every episode with me on an air mattress, having watched Baron Munchhausen, A Fish Called Wanda, the aborted Don Quixote making of spoof, La cité des enfants perdus, and that awful zoo movie, having rewound the Aspen reunion for glimpses of secret meaning betwixt the players, and having spent a large portion of my life quoting, reciting, and generally immersing myself in all things Monty, I agree with you. I should give them a chance. The Larch.
