Just Interrupting your Spheres

I have just returned from a long and painful try to watch Just Push Play live on ustream, as the first and only chance i have/had to catch it live until... the summer vacation. And it was Un-watchable.

Most of you who have met up in the Somacow chat will probably have heard my "minor" complaints about the feed of ustream, and i hate to do it, yet i find myself doing it every time it occurs. Instead i have decided to make this thread, and to get it all out of my system, thereby ridding me of the need to rant every time it happens. So Here it is.

Ustream provides live video, and i love this. However, the ustream that is today has become more and more of a mess. The site is now clogged with gadgets, Headers, scrolling news, twitter and Ads. Lots and lots of Ads.
I get the impression that ustream is now trying to do too much at once. It wants to show the stream, but also shower you in ads, site news and "Recommended live shows". The problem is that it is not able to carry all of it at once, resulting in less processing power spent on the actual stream itself, which is con considering stream in in the bloody name of the site.

Now, The gadget that annoys me the most is the "Recommended live shows". It annoys me so much, that it will in fact get it's own section of this rant.

The Issues:
1- Why would i want to see what ustream recommends when I'm already watching a stream. I don't know about you, but when i have found a stream and I'm watching it, i don't care if others are casting. I really don't.
2- The recommended shows are almost always not the slightest bit related to what I'm watching. At all.
3- None of the above would be such a problem if it wasn't for the fact that ustream insists on updating the damn thing every 5 seconds. And because it's almost 80 different recommended streams, it apparently can't pre-load the thumbnails, instead, it insists on loading everything over and over again, even if it has already been loaded seven time already!

In fact, the only real problem is issue #3, the fact that Ustream want's to update everything. At all times. All it cares about is updating these gadgets, update this update that; "Oh, gotta make sure they are aware what is live, right now" -Well what the heck is the point of spending so many resources on showing what's live when doing so infact renders the live shows broken?

It's like advertising for a better environment, but while doing so using so much material on the ads that you in fact hurt it!

Heck Ustream

We will be using livestream (well, I will be, the other shows choose their interface) for the next few weeks. When IT also becomes unreliable, we will switch again.

We continue to look for a financially feasible way to just serve up our content, hold the soap. Always feel free to brainstorm better ways to do this!

Thanks for caring enough to listen, Rep.

That's well and good, but if you choose to subject yourself to ads based on a simple browser choice, you don't have a ton of room to complain.  I like Chrome too, but if I'm going to go to ad-intensive sites I start up Firefox with no remorse.

Now here is a little post to clarify.

People like to hate. People... Like to talk thrash about things, i mean, look at somacow, there is quite a bit of hating in there.
To put it like this, I have never seen, nor have i ever tasted tastycakes, yet i know they are the most awful thing to ever grace the earth. Same goes for dunkin donuts and that 7/11 Mick was to. Hating is a part of human nature. It feels good to just let it all loose every once in a while.

I like to compare this whole thing to the process of schools. We all talk shit about them. We all say and know that they are pretty horrible places considering all the vile stuff that goes on in them. ( That is unless you were incredible lucky)
On the other hand school often does really cool things too, like field-trips, but every once in a while, it drops that one surprise math test. And it's almost always the bad experiences that makes the biggest imprints.
Right now, the ads on ustream is my surprise math-test, so therefore i naturally don't like ustream all that much right now.
You could, however, also say that you could prepare for the tests, go through the math books all week long (Here using firefox and the noscript), but here is another thing about the human race. We want everything served on a silver platter in front of us, with no effort of us as a consumer put into it. It has become the way of life, and it has become expected from all providers to do so, making those who does not follow this formula seem so much worse than they really in all honesty are.

I'm not saying that i always hate school/ustream, as they are both gateways to some pretty awesome things (Money, Jobs, Cars/ Live somacow, live everything really, free.) But every once in a while you have that shit day/experience, and we just have to unload on everything that we feel is wrong, ungrateful bastards as we are.

It's just how life is.

Does using ad blocking software have any negative affects on revenue generation for the network?

In the case of Ustream... no.  Well... yes... but not really.  In the off chance that they squeeze a pay ad in, and then someone clicks on the pay ad... we would lose out.

At this point, blocking ads on Ustream would take away about .0002 cents per month.

Of that .0002 cents...
75% goes to the officers.  (that Geoff and I)
20% goes to the business (that's somacow media inc... which is Geoff and I)
3% goes to middle management
1% goes to the "talent" (that's Geoff and I... and... J and Jamie)
1% is split amongst the production staff (Ross, Jamie, me, various others)

So I will say... If you donate to Cure for the Run in the amount of 10 bucks or greater... you will cover my end of things.  The others may come back at you for back pay, but that is between you as the listener and the other individuals that may feel like you are stealing from them.

Stuff.

-TheReptile

So... your counter is that you can complain about whatever you want?  Well, sure, this is the internet.  I'm just saying that I personally try to stay out of the 99% of people on the internet who whine about shit.

If the UStream ads are that big of a deal to you, donate enough to Somacow so they can go to paid video streaming solutions.  The fact of the matter is, paid CDNs are the only way to go in order to duck ads.  And that means that the money to support the bandwidth has to come from the broadcaster rather than sponsors.  The cheapest CDN's go for about $50 a month and have a pretty tight cap on viewer count, so you do the math.

Yet you are here.
Also, i like to consider this venting, not whining.

People always say, don't bottle things up. Yet i often do.
I just needed to get it off my chest, you know.

I know that what i say sometimes will look wrong and illogical, but hey, I'm only human.

There is a weird whining about whining vibe going on in here, but here's something really to whine about, you go out and you tell people to check out "ustream.com" and they inevitably go to "youstream.com" and then yell at you because nothing is there.  Haters.

It's hardly whining when I'm actually offering feasible alternatives to wallowing in one's own "suffering" due to the "torments" of UStream's ads.

And in response to your "youstream.com" comment, AM, you're absolutely right.  UStream should buy the domain next time it's up for grabs and just do a redirect, because that's an incredibly annoying thing to deal with.  Then again... for some reason Google hasn't used it's billions of expendable income to buy utube.com, so maybe these companies are just dense.

Oddly enough I was watching SomaCow live on livestream today, the first time I've ever tried it, and soon after the end of the first hour my browser crashed.  It never crashes.  I had to finally uninstall and reinstall my flash player and restart my computer.  I don't see how that would be livestream's fault, just thought that was an odd time for my Flash to implode for the first time ever.  I was looking forward to the next two hours too...damn it.

I think some of it has to do with gravity. J is losing weight, and I am ingesting 2-3 quarts of coffee and water per hour.

We will try to sit in a more conducive manner next time. Until then, believe me when I say that Ustream and Livestream are worth the money we spend, and nothing more. When I nail down a cost effective way of bringing the show to you guys without their input, I will dance a happy fatman dance.
