Iron Maiden

Woe to You Oh Earth and Sea
for the Devil sends the beast with wrath
because he knows the time is short
Let him who have understanding
reckon the number of the beast
for it is a human number
its number is six hundred and sixty six.

I lived alone
my mind was blank
I needed time to think to get the memories from my mind

What did I see?
Could I believe?
That what I saw that night was real and not just fantasy

Just what I saw
in my old dreams
were they
reflections of my walk man staring back at me?

'Cause in my dreams
it's always there
the evil face that twists my mind and brings me to despair

Night was black
was no use holding back
'Cause I just had to see
was someone watching me
In the mist
dark figures move and twist
was all this for real
or just some kind of hell
6-6-6 the Number of the Beast
Hell and fire was spawned to be released

Torches blazed and
sacred chants were phrased
as they start to cry
hands held to the sky
In the night
the fires are burning bright
the ritual has begun
Satan's work is done
6-6-6 the Number of the Beast
Sacrifice is going on tonight

This can't go on
I must inform the law
Can this still be real
or just some crazy dream?
but I feel drawn
towards the chanting hordes
seem to mesmerise...can't avoid their eyes
6-6-6 the Number of the Beast
6-6-6 the one for you and me

I'm coming back
I will return
And I'll possess your body
and I'll make you burn
I'll have the fire
I'll have the force
I'll have the power
to make my evil take its course

Mickey was saying on a recent SomaCow that when he writes a letter to someone, he sticks in a question such as, "Do you like bacon?" Obviously this was pertaining to a large operation of various sorts where a letter could be electronically glanced at or returned with a form letter that doesn't address the questions and concerns that one has taken their time to ask. If I were an adult, I might have some ways that the technique would apply to me.

My closest situation to that is that I enjoy giving corporations and large businesses some constructive criticism when the opportunity presents itself. I decided to fill in a survey for Best Buy because it puts participants in a raffle for 5K shopping sprees.

My main beef with them is that they don't have as many new releases and reissues in stock as I feel that they should. I start out by answering some of the questions with what I feel is enough of a variety, that it won't go unnoticed. I said that to say that I wish that I had chosen another specific example.

As mentioned here quite some time ago, the Stones have a top notch reissue package of Exile On Mainstreet. Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville was a tip of the hat to it, the title. It's regarded by most as their best work. I said in the survey that I've yet to see it in their stores. It doesn't come out until May.

Mick and Keith have mentioned through the months that they've been amazed at some of the stuff that they did, as they've gone through the tapes that ended up on the cutting room floor. David Gilmour has a hard drive with some of Syd Barret's unheard work but is undecided about whether or not to master it into a revised "Madcap Laughs" or something else due to the indignation that it would bring from purists.

Some of the highlights forthcoming on the new Exile are another version of it's last song, Soul Survivor, with Richards singing lead and containing improvised and different lyrics.

Good Time Woman;Originally cut during Sticky Fingers sessions, damn near carbon of Tumbling Dice with different lyrics.

Pass The Wine has long been known on the bootleg circuit as Sophia Loren. Fans will finally get to hear it. Alladin's Story, also long bootlegged, will finally see the polished light of day.

Here's some upcoming releases:

May

Broken Social Scene

Court Yard Hounds

The Hold Steady

The National

Devo

Band of Horses

LCD Soundsystem

The New Pornographers

Deftones

Stone Temple Pilots

Gaslight Anthem

Mark Ronson

Jack Johnson(I bought his fairly recent live disc and like it very much. He's not done anything that I haven't liked)(As I type, I'm listening to the much lauded, Field Music's, Measure, brand new, very good.)

July

Jamey Johnson

Scissor Sisters

RaRa Riot

Christina Aguilara;more synth, less soul

Kate Perry(I didn't think that I would like her because the last one was so popular that I avoided it since I really don't listen to the radio but I was wrong.)

Sometime this Summer

Arcade Fire

Another group that was new last year that I got around to and am totally con for is  Florence And The Machine.

That's most of it for now on forthcoming releases...some additional thought related newsy things in the next few days.

Ska is another one of those wide umbrella type terms that I'm not sure what it means, when I consider that it has been used on everyone from No Doubt, The Mighty Mighty Bostones to Sublime.

Ska (pronounced /ˈskɑː/, Jamaican [skja]) is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s, and was the precursor to rocksteady and reggae.[1] Ska combined elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues. It is characterized by a walking bass line accented with rhythms on the upbeat. In the early 1960s, ska was the dominant music genre of Jamaica and was popular with British mods. Later it became popular with many skinheads.[2][3][4][5]. Music historians typically divide the history of ska into three periods: the original Jamaican scene of the 1960s (First Wave), the English 2 Tone ska revival of the late 1970s (Second Wave) and the third wave ska movement, which started in the 1980s (Third Wave) and rose to popularity in the US in the 1990s.[6]

Groups usually don't fare well when the lead singer had as strong of a personality as Bradley Nowell did in Sublime. STP tried a couple times under different names sans Weiland and failed. No incarnation of Styx ever worked without Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw together but of course they can't get along. Nowell's widow was going to sue if the name was used but an "arangement" was reached.

The new lead singer is said to have an eerily similar voice to Nowell. It will be called, Sublime with Rome. Rome Ramirez and crew begin playing dates in Los Angeles on the stoner's holiday, 4/20. If it goes well more dates will be added and new material will be recorded. The initial run is six dates.

Sir Elton and Billy Joel have been practically touring non stop since some point during Clinton's presidency. The current tour isn't over yet but Joel has announced that he's taking a year off. They had last year's third highest grossing tour and he recently split with wife number three. He actually hasn't recorded a new song in close to twenty years which is admirable I think. He evidently felt like he had done what he could do in that sense. The story's not over yet but that's rare in the music business.

Unfortunately the suriving members of INXS haven't been trying auto asphysxiation and they are doing a rehash of their "biggest hits" with various fill in lead singers. Among those sitting in are Ben Harper, Rob Thomas, Tricky and someone else I never heard of. Be sure to avoid it in May.

The Pavement reunion tour begins in September and thoudands of tickets sold out in hours when they went on sale, almost a year before the tour. They say that they are all happy doing separate things now and that there are no plans for a new record. One of the members had to contact the label to get their work so that he could remember what they had done. I have a two disc retrospective of theirs, hmm.

There's not a lot of shining spots to point to in the 90's but they were one, not to be confused with a point of light.

Mike Campbell's work in the Heartbreakers and in the thousand other groups he's guested with, has always been marked with restraint. It's kind of his thing. Both him and the Heartbreaker keyboardest, Benmont Tench played on Johnny Cash's last studio album which is outstanding.

You can't tell it's them though. They are just first class musicians who never steal the show but are essential to the production, wherever they show up. Tom had to push Campbell to finally let loose on their new one coming out in May. Petty say's that they were having so much fun in the studio that the plug finally had to be pulled.

If you have even a passing knowledge of Tom, you know that stardom hasn't exempted him from plenty of tribulation and pain in life but he always comes thru it and what a life, to get to do what you enjoy. The new one is called Mojo.

Velvet Revolver is not done but Slash has a solo coming out in May as well, with many guests.

Also on 4/20, an album of country covers  from Willie Nelson. He felt he had done so many diversions in recent years that he should get back to country. In the last couple months, his tour bus was stopped once again for having some technically illegal subsatances a board.

In addition to Juliana Hatfield's one hit and my stalkerdom, she played bass with The Lemonheads in '92. Now you know.

Lilith Fair is Back for 2010

Ticket Announcement Coming Soon!
Sarah McLachlan has announced that Lilith Fair 2010 will tour more than 30 cities across the US and Canada. A two-week Lilith Fair tour of the UK and Europe is also in the works, with a concert in London confirmed so far.
Lilith Fair is a celebration of women in music. Sarah McLachlan conceived the idea for an all-female concert tour in 1996. At the time, Sarah was fed-up with the music industry’s refusal to promote tours with a heavily female lineup.
Lilith Fair experienced tremendous success as a festival concert tour in 1997, 1998 and 1999. In just three years, the Lilith Fair tour raised more than $10 million for women’s charities in North America.
Now Lilith Fair 2010 is back and better than ever! Check back frequently here at SarahMcLachlan.com for news and updates. Stay tuned for info on Lilith Fair Tickets including info on our exclusive Lilith Fair tickets presale.

Rock Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

billboard

An English band steeped in harmony, a reggae pioneer, progressive rockers who thrived despite a defection, four Swedes who combined their nation's traditions with their rock heroes and a man who prowled a ballroom floor singing "I Wanna Be Your Dog" wouldn't seem to have much in common.

For a night they did, as The Hollies, Jimmy Cliff, Genesis, ABBA and Iggy Pop and the Stooges accepted induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday - a ceremony almost as notable for who wasn't there as who was.

ABBA sold some 100 million records with hits such as "Waterloo," "Dancing Queen" and "Knowing Me, Knowing You" before disbanding in 1982. Songwriter Benny Andersson described how the melancholy of the "vodka belt" so far north, the pre-rock era music they heard on Swedish radio and the songs of their rock 'n' roll heroes all found their way into ABBA's material.

Andersson and ex-wife Anni-Frid Lyngstad attended the ceremony at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Agnetha Faltskog, who has a fear of flying, and Bjorn Ulvaeus, who had a family commitment, did not.

"I'm old enough to admit to the fact that I think we did a great job," Lyngstad said.

Keep that in the past tense: Lyngstad told the audience that ABBA would never perform again. She brought along her grandson, a heavy metal musician who nonetheless appreciates grandma's music. Actress Meryl Streep, who was in the "Mamma Mia" movie that introduced ABBA's music to a new generation and older ones that didn't pay attention at the time, was also there.

The audience at the Waldorf and watching on the Fuse TV network got one-fourth of ABBA on stage. Andersson played piano as country star Faith Hill sang "The Winner Takes It All."

Backstage, Lyngstad feigned anger that it had taken so long for ABBA to be voted in.

"I'm very angry that Madonna got in before us," she joked.

Genesis had two distinct incarnations. They were a fixture of Britain's progressive rock scene in the 1970s, known as much for lead singer Peter Gabriel's theatricality as the music. When Gabriel quit, the band put drummer Phil Collins in front of the microphone and they became regulars on the pop charts.

Phish singer and childhood Genesis fan Trey Anastasio said Collins showed hints of his unexpected later role in his musicianship.

"Phil's drums were the only thing that could hold those disparate elements together," Anastasio said. "He always seemed to be aware that the song came first."

Phish paid tribute to both Genesis generations, performing the meandering "Watcher of the Skies" and the pop hit "No Reply At All."

Gabriel was missing from the ceremony. Former bandmate Mike Rutherford said Gabriel sent his apologies, but he was preparing for a tour.

Collins, who seemed to be frowning every time cameras caught him, didn't seem to miss Gabriel.

"We've played without him for 30 years," he said backstage. "We're used to not having him around."

The Hollies also had two lives. Music historian and Bruce Springsteen guitarist Steve Van Zandt said singers Allan Clarke and Graham Nash's "exquisite English harmonies were second, or shared only by the Beatles. Clarke and Nash harmonized again on two of their best-known early hits, "Bus Stop" and "Carrie-Anne."

"The Hollies, after I left in 1968, had the audacity, the gall, to have three No. 1 records after I left," Nash joked. "Thanks a lot, guys."

Those 1970s standards were "The Air That I Breathe," "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" and "Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress)."

"We started out in the '60s," band member Terry Sylvester said. "Now we're in our 60s."

Jamaica's Cliff was among the first to export reggae. His best-known songs include "You Can Get It If You Really Want," "The Harder They Come" and "Many Rivers to Cross," and he energetically performed each of them on Monday.

Haiti's Wyclef Jean recalled loving Cliff's songs so much he translated some of them into hymns so his father would allow them to be sung in church. One of his biggest thrills came when, after a recording session, Cliff accepted his invitation to stay over in his New Jersey apartment.

"When we saw Jimmy Cliff, we saw ourselves," Jean said. "Meaning, coming from Haiti and the Caribbean, you have to see someone do it for you to be inspired to think you could do it. When I saw Jimmy Cliff, I could see my face."

The Michigan-based Stooges never sold many records. But the brutal force of their 1973 album "Raw Power" influenced the punk movement to come, and the rubber-limbed Pop was an electric frontman.

Pop delivered middle-finger salutes to his audience and, at the black-tie affair, had his shirt off even before performing "Search and Destroy." He prowled through the audience for "I Wanna Be Your Dog," and the Stooges were joined onstage by inductor Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day and Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam.

"Roll over Woodstock," Pop said. "We won!"

For all their toughness, the Stooges seemed genuinely touched by the honor. Scott Asheton paid tribute to his brother and bandmate Ron Asheton, who died last year. Pop choked back tears in thanking his colleagues for getting back together and working.

Besides Ron Asheton, some of Monday's inductees died before their special night. They included songwriters Ellie Greenwich and Otis Blackwell, represented by family members.

"You made it, dad," Otis Blackwell Jr. said, looking skyward.

Songwriter Jeff Barry had the most tragicomic reason for missing his big night: He couldn't catch a flight to New York.

"They delayed his plane, delayed it, delayed it and then canceled it. It's an unbelievable drag," said Van Zandt, who read Barry's speech from his smart phone.

Songwriter Carole King inducted old colleagues from an era (the 1950s and early 1960s) when performers largely left songwriting to others. They included Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil ("You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," "On Broadway"), Greenwich & Barry ("Leader of the Pack," "Be My Baby"), Blackwell ("All Shook Up," "Don't Be Cruel"), Mort Shuman ("Save the Last Dance for Me," "This Magic Moment" with Doc Pomus) and Jesse Stone ("Sh-Boom," "Shake, Rattle and Roll").

Another non-performing inductee was David Geffen. Before he spread his influence to other parts of the entertainment business, Geffen started the Asylum and Geffen record labels.

copyright

Roger Miller‘s widow, Mary Miller, has
won a legal battle over the copyrights to
some of her late husband’s most beloved
music. Back in 2004, Mary sued
Sony/ATV Publishing in Nashville for the
rights to the songs ‘Dang Me,’ ‘Chug-ALug,’
‘You Can’t Roller Skate in a Buffalo
Herd’ and his biggest career hit, ‘King of
the Road.’
According to the Associated Press, U.S.
District Judge William J. Haynes ruled last
week that copyright ownership of all of
Roger’s songs published in 1964 will go
to Mary Miller and Roger Miller Music Inc.
The judge also awarded them a little more
than $900,000 for royalties lost over the
years.
Roger Miller died in 1992 at the age of 56
after a long battle with cancer.

Drive-By Truckers #1 on Billboard Indie Chart and #22 on Top 200
....Drive-By Truckers’ The Big To-Do debuted at #22, the band’s highest debut ever, on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart, #1 on the Indie Chart, #6 Rock Chart and #9 on the Digital Chart. The Big To-Do is also charting in various territories internationally.
*
They have always maintained that they would never re-form and famously turned down $1 billion (£600 million) to tour again, but Abba have given a new generation of fans hope of seeing the band perform live.

For the Mamma Mia! devotees who have come to the band’s music nearly 30 years after they split, tribute bands and YouTube clips of the Swedish foursome in satin and spandex seemed the closest they could get.

But in an interview with The Times today, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, the male half of the Swedish group, offer a beguiling change of tone.

Asked if they would consider an intimate one-off performance — perhaps with an orchestra — that could be beamed around the world, Andersson said: “Yeah, why not?”

He added: “I don’t know if the girls sing anything any more. I know Frida [Anni-Frid Lyngstad] was in the studio.” Then a little later: “It’s not a bad idea, actually.”

Ulvaeus threw in a reference to the Super Trouper album’s last song. “We could sing The Way Old Folks Do,” he said. The pair's comments may offer little more than a glimmer of hope, but they are in contrast to previous statements by the band members, who split in 1982.

Only two years ago Ulvaeus said: “We will never appear on stage again. There is simply no motivation to regroup. Money is not a factor and we would like people to remember us as we were — young, exuberant, full of energy and ambition.

“I remember Robert Plant saying Led Zeppelin were a cover band now because they cover all their own stuff. I think that hit the nail on the head.”

Andersson has also previously derided talk of a reunion. “We’d need a good reason to re-form and I just don’t see one. We could never recreate the old days. I’d rather be remembered for the way we were 30 years ago,” he said.

Abba have enjoyed a renaissance. One in four British households owns the DVD of a film version of the Mamma Mia!, the musical inspired by their works. They have sold 370 million records, and sell about three million each year.

This year AbbaWorld, an attraction based on the careers of Ulvaeus and Andersson and their female bandmates Agnetha Fältskog and Lyngstad, opened at Earls Court, in West London. Visitors pay £22 for an adult ticket to see costumes that the band wore in 1974 on their way to winning the Eurovision Song Contest, and have the chance to wear a silver jumpsuit and sing and dance with holograms of the band.

Ulvaeus and Andersson are promoting their new musical, Kristina, which opens at the Royal Albert Hall on April 14. The production is based on a 2,000- page epic by the Swedish novelist Vilhelm Moberg, but has been changed for an English audience.

Ulvaeus said: “We’ve cut the play down from three hours down to two hours . . . And, also, I approached Herbert Kretzmer, who did Les Misérables, to translate the lyrics into English.”

Abba are thought to have sung together only once since they split. In 2003 they joined in a rendition of a Swedish happy-birthday song at the 50th birthday party of Gorel Hanser, Ulvaeus and Andersson’s manager, in front of about 150 guests.

In 2000 they turned down a $1 billion deal to reunite for a 100-date tour. At the time Ulvaeus said: “This is the budget of a small country so we had to give it some thought. In the end we decided that, whatever offer was on the table, it would be stupid to re-form and utterly ludicrous to change the images people all over the world have of us.”

It remains to be seen whether the female members would be interested in a reunion. Fältskog lived as a recluse on a remote Swedish island, saying that she hated fame, while Lyngstad married a German nobleman and is a princess.

These are my selectified selectifications from MOJO's 3 and 4 star reviews. Most are 4. I'm no Emily Post or anything but I think it's a nice touch to mail a group a thank you note for letting you steal their music on line.

Angus and Julia Stone  Down The Way
Down the Way is the sophomore album from Australia’s brother and sister Angus and Julia Stone. Their debut, A Book Like This was an accomplished collection of delicate acoustic melodies with child-like innocence.
Down the Way has been a long time coming, during which time the band have travelled all over the world, and, inevitably grown up. The warning tremor of foreboding strings in album opener Hold On immediately suggests that this album has moved on from the sweetness and light of its predecessor. Employing a full band, with now permanent members on drums and bass, the sound is full and rich, with lyrics of someone who is starting to notice the darker aspects of life.
Indeed, the idea of the beauty that can be found in darkness is very much a theme for the album. If A Book Like This told the tale of the first flushes of romance, then Down The Way is what happens when, after years down the line, it all falls apart.
Not your average brother/sister combo, the Stones write independently from each other, taking it in turns to take lead vocals. Angus’s ‘Big Jet Plane’ showcases his heart-on-the-sleeve lyrics, clearly influenced by spending so much time on the road. In the early days Angus was so crippled by shyness he was practically unable to look out into the crowd at gigs, but it would seem his writing has allowed him to come into his own, with his robust, honest songs.
‘Santa Monica Dream’ is again a direct response to the time the band have spent in the US, using it as a metaphor for giving up on dreams. Backed by simple picked acoustic, this track showcases the wonderful way in which the Stones’ voices blend together, matching and complementing each other on pitch and tone. With Julia’s child-like, sing-song style, listening to this track almost transports you back to their family home and the early beginnings of the band.
Down the Way is a little corner of rustic, charming, unpretentious enjoyment. Like that coffee shop or park bench that you’d like to think no one else knows about, put there simply for you to appreciate. Angus and Julia Stone have seen a lot and done a lot, but ultimately stick to what they know, laying it bare in their uncompromised, sincere songwriting and honed musicianship.

Axl Rose is being sued by a management company that claims the Guns N' Roses frontman owes it nearly $2 million in commissions.

Front Line Management, a Los Angeles-based company founded by legendary personal manager Irving Azoff, filed suit against Rose in L.A. Superior Court on Thursday, seeking $1.87 million in unpaid fees, according to Billboard. Front Line asserts that the company was hired to be Rose's personal manager in 2008 and had an oral agreement with the singer to receive 15 percent of Guns N' Roses' profits.

In the suit, Front Line claims that GN'R made more than $12 million while touring Asia, Canada and South America in support of their long-awaited 2008 album Chinese Democracy.

Rose — who frequently addresses stories about him and his group through his Twitter account (seriously) — has so far remained mum on the suit, instead posting updates on GN'R's South American tour and thanking fans for their support.

An e-mail sent to Rose's publicist seeking comment on the lawsuit was not returned by press time.

In the meantime Guns N' Roses continue to tour South America, and through Twitter Rose recently announced plans to make up a show in Rio de Janeiro that was canceled earlier this month due to rain and wind. The band will also play shows in Central America and Puerto Rico before wrapping the jaunt. Currently, the only other shows on their itinerary are a pair of appearances at summer festivals in Finland and Sweden.

Malcolm McLaren, punk who shook up the Seventies, dies aged 64

timesonline.co.uk

Malcolm McLaren once said that rock’n’roll “doesn’t necessarily mean a band, it doesn’t mean a singer, and it doesn’t mean a lyric, really. It’s that question of trying to be immortal.”

McLaren, who died yesterday in Switzerland at the age of 64, was one of the tiny band of backstage figures who have left as indelible an imprint on popular culture as any singer or musician.

As the manager and creator of the Sex Pistols and the owner with Vivienne Westwood, then his girlfriend, of the boutique Sex, he was the presiding impish visionary behind the punk movement that traumatised and thrilled 1970s Britain in equal measure.

With the passing of time, McLaren metamorphosed into something close to a maverick national treasure. While Westwood went on to become a dame, he dabbled in films, corporate motivational speaking, music, art, reality television, politics (standing as a candidate for Mayor of London and promising to introduce alcohol to libraries) and stand-up comedy, always with the same arch and inscrutable persona.

History will be on its knees to him
Malcolm McLaren: rock’n’roll swindler
One of his last main projects was History Is for P***ing on, his one-man show last summer at the Edinburgh Fringe. McLaren faced up to accusations of charlatanism and of turning popular culture into a cheap marketing gimmick. “I’m here to prove,” he said, “that all that is absolutely true.”

His girlfriend, Young Kim, said that McLaren had the cancer mesothelioma diagnosed in October, but it had only recently become debilitating. “He didn’t accept he was going to die," she said. He was working right up his death, most recently planning a 13-part BBC series on popular culture.

Dame Vivienne said: “When we were young and I fell in love with Malcolm, I thought he was beautiful and I still do. I thought he is a very charismatic, special and talented person. The thought of him dead is really very sad. We hadn’t been in touch for a long time. Ben (her son) and Joe (the couple's son) were with him when he died.”

John Lydon, issued a tribute signed Johnny Rotten, the name he used as lead singer of the Sex Pistols: “For me Malc was always entertaining, and I hope you remember that. Above all else he was an entertainer and I will miss him, and so should you.”

McLaren was born in London in 1946 and brought up by his grandmother. He was expelled from several art colleges but not before he had formed the views and strategies that later underpinned the apparent anarchy of punk. “I didn’t create it (punk) alone or out of nothing,” he said last year. “Duchamp chose a urinal. I chose Johnny Rotten.”

Sir Richard Branson, whose Virgin Records signed the Sex Pistols after they were dropped by EMI and then by A & M Records, said: “Knowing Malcolm’s skills of media manipulation and his knowledge that when someone dies their products double in sales, I suspect tonight he’s having the last laugh in South America. Anyway, I hope he is.”

Last night McLaren’s website was blank except for the message: “Malcolm will return shortly . . . ”
