The second layer of insulation is almost done! The wall by the garage will be done up today, too. After this, lights installed tomorrow and then this weekend blow insulation in the attic! Moving along!
Rowan is still working hard...

We're going Green, can't you see, we keep the ac above 63...

Whew. What a weekend. We perhaps bit off quite a large chunk of cellcake to chew, but we got it all down, done, and in.

Went to Lowe's and bought several dozen bags of this:

If you get more than 20 units of this, you can rent the hopper/blower for free (less $250.00 deposit).

The machine kicked ass, in that it never stopped working, but it blew ass, in that it shot out product in spurts, rather than a pleasing fast stream. What was quoted as being a "one to two hour blow in" became a two day grueling race against time and heat.

Day One: Special thanks to Jeff, Kelly, Tommy, and Jen for helping me through this. We blew in a little over half, pausing only to eat subs, go swimming, eat at mellow mushroom, and fix a 2 foot square "skylight". This is why I usually do not have truck with guys that use the J-Jeff spelling. Ceiling Jeff is Watching You Insulate.

We all ribbed Jeff quite a bit for the Fail, (http://www.peakarts.com) and Tommy kicked ass and had us fixed up in no time, so we got back to blowing.

I knew I was too big to go in the attic, so I manned the hopper, with Tommy and Jeff taking turns in the ridiculous 90 something degree heat. The attic easily got up to 120 degrees, but whenever I looked in on Jeff, he was sitting in the full lotus position, rubbing his thumb on his iPhone and humming contentedly. That dude is Iron.

Masks are key when blowing this shit. While it is not dangerous, it is just so damned dusty, you would quickly choke on it. I am still pulling black tendrils out of my sinuses.

Day Two of the insulation blow in started with Felix (http://www.primetimegeek.com) showing up bright at the crack of dawn (a far better time to blow this shit, it would seem), and after some coffee and doughnuts, we renewed our assault. Things seemed to go faster, and we managed to blow in all of the remaining bags in no time. Well. Some Time. Okay, we sent Felix home 45 minutes late, and Erica is probably steamed. The point is, it's done!

Here's some video SuperMomProducerHostCamerawomanJen took of the second day's wrap up. That insulation is thick and perfect. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YBMlpW_v5Q

Not to be outdone, Gary (http://www.justpushplay.org) batted clean up. Literally! He batted down any peaks remaining up in the attic, and cleaned the hell out of the garage and driveway. What was a disaster zone is now looking sharp, and tomorrow we should be in good shape to call in the insulation inspection.

Thanks to you guys, all - Next weekend: DRYWALL!!!!!!!!!!!......... (sob)

It looks like you have some, as my b-in-law would call them, "pointing hands". They tend to be clean and soft. Though my hands are the same way they don't do to much pointing these days. I guess maybe "typing hands" would be more appropriate in my case.  These things haven't done any actual hard work in years.

Anyway, yes, its a great picture and it looks like you guys are well on your way. I'll try to leave some time open for next weekend. Just let us know.

Well, i stood out there at 3 pm today in the blazing heat of mid afternoon.

The studio, with no ac on, no fan on, was about 80. With the garage door open.

That's a hell of a start.

Is it just me, or are there no roof vents over your garage? That's pretty normal up here, but in warmer climates I would think they'd be standard. It must have been at least twice as hot up top while blowing the insulation. If you put a few static vents or at least one turbine in, you might be able to cut down on running the A/C a little.

Can't be there in person, so I'm always looking for ways to help remotely.

No turbine, but there are three slit vents. When we had hurricanes in 04, they leaked a bit from the sideways rain.

The slits are about 4 feet long each, and, like the goggles, do nothing.

I thought about installing a turbine this week, but I know enough of my limitations to realize that I should not break my roof's seal.

We also have soffits. J assures me that that is a manly term. Soffet? Boffin? Something. We stapled a bunch of styrofoam thingies along the roof perimeter so the insulation wouldn't block the soffets.

From the pics it looks like there is a gable vent.  The cheapest route to moving more air up there is to put a fan in that gable vent.
